Hostess Brand is Closed

We have been  listening to news of Hostess’ potential demise for the past day.
Most of this focused on the almost 200 workers in Seattle that might lose their jobs.

On my slow drive home tonight, with the national firm apparently taking a dive, the talk was all about the apparent run on all things Hostess. Get them now, before they’re gone.

Hostess was not a big part of my childhood.
Twinkies, Ho-Hos, Ding-Dongs, etc were not on my parent’s shopping list.
Not even Wonder Bread.

I think I was aware of Wonder Bread, but the light, airy, white bread we did not buy was Bunny Bread.
Follow the link for some up-to-date Bunnyness. Really – especially those of you that dabble with computer coding. It is a site to behold. Bunny Bread is apparently in good health.

When we were in New York city, we picked up something similar to Ho-Hos and Ding-Dongs with an East Coast accent.
Yodels and Devil Dogs by Drake’s Bakery.

Devil Dogs

From Wikipedia, Drake’s started in the late 1800’s, Hostess in 1921.
Somewhere along the line Drake’s was aquired by Hostess, so they are gone as well.
I guess the Devil Dogs we brought back to my work-mate were more special than we thought at the time.
Some nostalgia for her, just in the nick of time.

I am sorry for those that are about to lose their jobs.
But some part of me feels that the loss of the Hostess brand may not be the worst loss we feel this year.

I haven’t bought anything by them in decades, but I still want them to just BE there. (as part of my childhood) Everything seems to be going away…

It seems a little fishy to me. “Oh, you’re going on strike?” “Well, we’ll just have to close down the whole business. So there!”
Maybe a comment from NPJ doing a comparison with another well-loved ex-corporation?

    1) An old high school friend jokes that he’s going to stock up on Twinkies & sell them on eBay (he does sell stuff on eBay — his other claim to fame is that he once jumped off a freighter in Superior somewhere and somehow swam safely to shore).

    2) My fave facebook meme (photo): “WTF? They legalize pot but take away Twinkies.”

    3) “That’s what ah said. Bunnnny Bread.”
